Huawei has just officially unveiled the P50 series in a Livestream, so the Huawei P50 and P50 Pro are finally official. Both devices share a similar design, the Pro model stands out from the base model mainly by the rounded display to the sides. The equipment is a little surprising because Huawei completely renounces 5G – probably not least because of the US sanctions, which make it impossible for the company to buy or manufacture 5G SoCs. Instead, the Huawei P50 relies on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 4G, the Huawei P50 Pro is optionally available with the same Qualcomm chip or with a HiSilicon Kirin 9000 4G, presumably the two variants are intended for different regions. With Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, and USB-C 3.1 Gen 1, the smartphones are otherwise well connected. The devices are waterproof, the fingerprint sensor is integrated into the display. Speaking of display: Both smartphones have an AMOLED display with a resolution of 2,700 x 1,228 pixels, the P50 is 6.5 inches tall and 90 Hz fast, while the P50 Pro is 6.6 inches tall and 120 Hz fast. The battery holds 4,100 mAh for the base model or 4,360 mAh for the Pro model, charging is in any case via USB-C with up to 66 watts, wireless charging with a maximum of 50 watts is only possible with the more expensive device.
Cameras: The monochrome sensor is only available on the Pro
The Huawei P-Series has always been known for its exciting camera features, and the P50 series is no exception. Both the Huawei P50 and the P50 Pro rely on the same 50 megapixels f/1.8 main camera with a small-format equivalent focal length of 23 mm. The ultra-wide-angle camera resolves 13 MP on both devices, but the P50 Pro, offers an even larger field of view with 13 mm than the 16 MP camera of the base model. The telephoto camera of the Huawei P50 has a resolution of 12 MP and a focal length of 125 mm, while the P50 Pro offers a focal length of 90 mm and a resolution of 64 MP. Both telephoto cameras have optical image stabilization, a laser autofocus sensor is standard equipment. The P50 Pro also has a fourth camera that combines a 40 MP monochrome sensor with a 26 mm f/1.6 lens – this should enable particularly detailed, low-noise images in low light. The 13-megapixel front camera sits in a punch hole on both devices.
Prices and availability
The Huawei P50 costs in China with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of flash memory 4,488 yuan (about 586 euros), for the P50 Pro with 8 GB and 128 GB respectively 5,988 yuan (about Ksh 100,00) are due, the top model with 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage costs 7,988 yuan (about ksh 135,000). Information on the prices and availability of the Huawei P50 series in Europe is not yet available to us. However, Huawei has already confirmed that the devices will be available worldwide.
